Take off the plastic cover next to the clutch and give the bendix unit a spray with a good brake cleaner such as Wurth then try spraying with GT85 or similar and re try.
Unfortunately I think the starter riing gear needs to be removed to remove the bendix gear to check & clean properly.
One thing to check carefully is the lengths of the bolts holding the starter motor in place as I have seen problems caused by these bolts being slightly too long and fouling the bendix.
