dave56,

I wasn't directly responing to you but anyway.... Your post, whilst certainly correctly squaring the kart, does not centralise the column. You could have the column turned hard right and still have all four wheels pointed in the right direction. In a race car this doesn't make a massive difference, you just have the wheel on the wonk and lose some steering lock in one direction and gain some in the other. For a kart, because we attach the track rods directly to the column via a Pitman Arm, not having the column centralised can significantly alter your steering rates and consequently weight jacking also.

Regarding using a straight edge across the kingpins and another across the column bolts. This works, assuming you have a straight chassis. My method centralises the column regardless of the state of the chassis.

Regarding the rest of your post, I agree. Everyone has their own methods and should use what works for them. In my view, tracking discs are just as good as lasers in many respects. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Of course, while lasers may not be calibrated and therefore as accurate as claimed, neither are tracking discs.
