transponder - new battery needed??

we have an old transponder which was working fine last year, with one green flash when fully charged.

Now, when put on the charger it flashes red, but not the usual "on-off" charging flashing, it is more of a rapid "flicker". It does this for as long as its on the charger, and when taken off it has no lights showing at all.

The charger and cradle are fine - our other transponder is charging as normal.

I've done a search on here and tried all the suggestions I've found.

So, is it time for a new battery? if so, who/where is best to send the transponder to?

please don't suggest resorting to a DIY job with the dremel - my 11 year-old would insist on doing it himself (its his dremel!)
