The RCD looks for an imbalance between L and N so I would have thought it would still work without the equipment even being grounded. Just think how many appliances don't actually have an earth (have a plastic earth connector on the plug)

I think your biggest problem is going to be the quality of the output from your genny. You may need to experiment with different ratings of RCD(time to react). I live out in the sticks and had to change from 30 to 100 milliseconds on our mains supply to stop false trips.

Disclaimer - I'm no electrician so if someone else knows better, please tell me I'm wrong!
