It looks like there's a rescue package likely.
Paper is a lot cheaper than magazines in many ways but print run is a massive influencer. Low print runs aren't easy to get on newspaper presses. They have to clean and prep the presses exactly the same to print 1,000 copies or 10,000 copies, that's likely to push the cost per copy so that the difference isn't as significant given the dimunition in quality. I do think they could save a bit by reducing the quality of the paper and cover a bit which might help make it more viable.
There's also the issue of shelf space for newspapers, much harder to get than magazines.
