Like Alan says stick with the floor tank but check your fuel pumps. It sounds like the pumps need a re build. If the fuel drops back from the pump when the motors are not running that will be the problem.
If they are the rectangular Mikuni pumps that are widely used each pump is only a 5 min job to re kit.
