I've read somewhere, it may have been here, a contention that the soft foam helmet supports can actually compress and launch the head upwards on rebound, thereby causing more damage.

There are hard foams around too which I suppose would be less likely to do that.

I think wearing a neck support (I try not to call them neck braces these days) is a comfort item, not a safety item. I agree with the posters who contend that if the MSA/CIK/FIA had any real evidence of their efficiency they would manage them with a minimum performance standard. After all, the FIA isn't backward in acquiring "homologation fees" where it can!
