Even leaving the Seal aside, I suppose there is another factor which will make a builder rebuilt engine a better one, to your own attempt: EXPERIENCE of multiple builds!
Like everything in life, the more you do it the better you are at it. You know what to look for, what is important etc. Even if you open and rebuild your engine multiple times you'd still have only limited experience to a mechanic who goes through dozens of different engines and their particular problems.
So, there are formulae out there where you can reportedly rebuild your own engine (TKM, Blue), but is it going to be as fast or faster than one built by someone with lots of rebuilds under his own belt?
