High octane fuels are used to prevent detonation in high compression engines.

Kart engines that we use are NOT high performance, far from it in fact.

Using an octane that is too high can actually cause a performance drop due to the flame speed being too slow.

The higher octanes burn slower.

You don't want a bang but a burn.

That's why high compression engines 'knock' if the ignition is too advanced or the octane rating is too low.

The detonation 'knock' is not caused by the burn but by the rapid pressure rise after the ignition.

Your common or garden premium pump fuel is just fine.
