If he is starting out then you have lots to consider when choosing his first kart. It will all be about learning initially. There would be no harm in buying a decent 2nd hand kart for a lot less than the 3 meetings old tonykarts and seeing how he gets on, before you splash out any more cash.
Chassis like intrepid silverstones i hear are very good (and easy to set up) and a few people i know got theirs for £400. thats the whole rolling chassis, just no engine!
And when it comes to Jnr Max, you get the long life between rebuilds but there are lots of things to set up. have you considered TKM? and the grid sizes of these classes where you are?
