sorry for resurrecting this thread (and this issue)...

I had an interesting conversation with someone who has been involved in karting for a very long time.

he runs drivers in max classes, and I was pretty dissappointed to hear that, at the circuits he attends, greasing the clutch is now the done thing.

is it really neccesary to be competitive? the figure i've heard is 8 tenths. in my class (snr max) at my club, i'm about 1.2 seconds / lap off the front running pace. I've always been comfortable with being beaten by more experienced and more talented drivers - but when I hear about how widespread greasing is, it does pose some serious issues.

do I really want to cheat? no. will this mean I never get near the pace of the front runners? is cheating part and parcel of being competitive?
