You are probably correct that there will be many stages in when it comes to braking, with respect to the locking or unlocking of the rear tyres.

I would expect that the driver would apply the brakes hard initially, then as the tyres reach their limit of adhesion, the driver may release the pressure on the brakes to keep the balance, then reapply the brakes to the original pressure once everything is in check.

Or perhaps i am giving too much credit to drivers to be able to do that perfectly.

Something that may be interesting to see, is the onboard camera video from my kart at kartmasters. It was mounted to my left upper seat stay, so should be able to get a good view of what i do under braking. Might have to get in contact with the producers to get a copy of it :)
