Hi ac1962,
buzzinrussell's advice is one good way.

Another is to put the exaust on a good hot barbeque,(or hot fire)this will burn-off all carbon/oil deposits inside the exhaust if left to gain dull red heat.

Of course, this must be done observing precautions regarding risk of burns or fire: common sense is required!
