hi, erm doubt its the air filter, you can clean this with brake cleaner and a bucket of soapy water....dont chuck it jus cos it looks dirty, in terms of carbs get a pop off tool and padde arm height gauge, it rules that problem out. to look at the piston, take the plug out and airbox off and you can see the side of the piston clearly if you turn the engine over.
in terms of the sprocket, having a 76 on compared to an 80 is a bit like starting you car in 3rd gear instead of 1st, fast once it gets going but naff off the start!...less teeth on sprocket = high top speed, low acceleration, more teeth = low top speed, high acceleration essentially!
