Agreed any battery can fail as balanced with one example on the same day in Rotax BUT is it poor starter maintenance when 3 BRAND NEW items fail and poor carb maintenance when 1 BRAND NEW carb develops an issue within 2 days?
Another issue also came to light today when the supplied BRAND NEW air box was found to be split along the seam caused by what looks like a manufacturing issue and would have probably resulted in post race exclusion anyway had the kart managed to last the 10 mins plus a lap of the final without suffering a wire fracture in a multi plug.
Unfortunately none of these items are covered by any warranty so yet another hand in pocket adventure.
As for the supply of a starter repair kit with a new motor (none of ours had them) if true this must be an admission of the fact that IAME know the starter is either of inferior quality or not fit for purpose.
Having repaired 2 of the 3 starters now using Rotax repair kits and silicone on the brush braids they may indeed be reliable or as reliable as they ever can be but the fact remains that the third did not suffer the broken brush braid fate but simply refused to crank the motor at any more than approx 30 rpm so would not start the motor! That one now resides in the bin.
Lets face it all kit has short comings of some type mainly due to the abuse we administer but maybe the time has come to stop bashing any product that simply does not suit you weather it be IAME, Rotax, TKM or Honda, I have simply reported failures based on fact and 'field trials'
not a like or dislike of any manufacturer and its product, indeed it could be said that it is in my personal interest to have products that fail in the market place to be able to earn a crust.
Rotax, as everyone knows also suffer breakages from time to time but on checking my records over the last 3 years I have received for repair the following failures:-
1 Broken Con Rod.
5 big end failures
1 Broken balance shaft
4 Crank oil seal failures
2 Water pump seal failures
4 Piston failures ( all within the same 8 week period from different builders 1 mine & 3 others all repaired under warranty)
1 Broken water pump impeller ( due to broken spring washer from under loose head bolt, A N Other builder)
Not in my view a poor reliability record showing a particular weakness in one area.
It appears as all forums now are for telling people what they don't want based on an individual personal preference rather than a tool to offer help and constructive advice to those less experienced contributors on solving the specific problems they encounter with their karts and karting in general.
