The new starters will have the modified brushes but they still fail, just last a bit longer.

Using RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanising) silicone sealant on the positive braid will extend the life considerably. You can do it without removing the brushes.

Once you've removed the starter, undo the three Philips screws then grip the pinion very firmly and pull off the case.

Apply the silicone to the brush braid and the brass terminal then make sure you grip the pinion before putting the case back on. if you don't grip the pinion, the case magnets will pull the armature out past the brushes and you'll have more work to do.

Try and get into the habit of just testing the starter when you come in because the braid breaks while you're on track due to the vibration but you don't realise it until you're back on the grid and want to start the engine for the race.

If you test when you come in and it doesn't start, you have enough time to fix things.
