Thanks for the replies guys.

I used to race pro karts, and the grids for those are huge, but I agree, maybe the addition of new classes and the fact that people are more financially constrained than they used to be, may be a contributing factor.

I also think that the grass-roots side of karting has completely gone. I was always more of a Rotax fan than TKM, but I think the TKM fanclub were those that preferred the harder tyres, the higher revving engines, and the fact that they could rebuild them themselves - and as far as I know, none of this realistically exists anymore.
