The practice of orientating the circlip so that the gap was at top or bottom was started when the circlips used had "ears", and was intended to stop the inertial effects of the ears from causing the circlip to spring out of place. This no longer applies to modern earless circlips. I find it best to position them so that one end is only just past the removal groove in the piston, to make subsequent removal easier using my plier method, or to just hook out with a small screwdriver.
