It is very straight forward. The laser alignment tool just clips on to the rear sprocket and the light dot is shown on the drive sprocket teeth. With the chain on, get the dot in the centre of the drive sprocket and bingo. Rotate the rear wheels by 90 degrees and check again. Repeat until you have done a complete rotation. i.e. It takes just a few seconds. Obviously, if there is misalignment then adjust the postion of the rear sprocket accordingly. It is also is a quick way of telling whether either sprocket is truly straight. Even brand new sprockets can be slightly out of true. We found that using this device helped increase the life of both sprockets and chains, and that was a big saving.
I know that the same can be achieved using the straight edge, but that just takes longer. Especially, when you're someone like me who is not really mechanically savvy and needed all the help I could get. In my personal opinion, it was a good investment.
Compare it to doing the washing by hand or using a washing machine. Both achieve the same result, clean clothes, but one is easier.
It just meant that I ate fewer bacon butties for a short while, to pay for it.
