The logical reason possibly was that these things have a tendency to get bent.

The idea being that if you were scrutineered and your bent axle was outside the laid down homologation, then was it a result of deliberate bending ( as suggested in a recent post) or an accident?

Of course, the next thing is that people are cheating by using the 'common sense' in the rule to manufacture loopholes. No doubt those who do it would say it was exactly the same as riding the kerbs deliberately or driving someone out to the kerbs, both of which are illegal in the book but done frequently in fact.
