It can, and does.
But to minimise the risk, we always pour neat petrol down the sparkplug hole after each meeting, with the piston at the top of it's stroke.
This is repeated several times over the next day or so, not forgeting to empty the crankcase by removing the carb pulse pipe and pulling the engine over vigorously to expell the petrol.
Some use Methylated Spirit, WD 40 and all sorts of oil dissolving agents. But whatever you use, it's not a good idea to leave an engine stood for a long period of time: our engines are started regularly (even on the stand is better than nothing) and allowed to reach at least 100 degrees C.
