Basically, the affect of track width on the rear of the kart can appear to "swap" as the circuit changes grip as well as from slow high lock corners to fast low lock corners. In contrast, the affect of track width on the front of the kart will largely stay the same regardless of conditions.

In situations where all four tyres are contributing to grip, you will always gain grip by minimising weight transfer. You do this by lowering mass in the kart and increasing width. In situations where one tyre fully unloads, you will generally gain grip by increasing weight transfer (raising weight, reducing width). However, you will never have more grip than with both/all tyres contributing.

Try to visualise the above statements in relation to high speed corners and low speed corners then in relation to dry conditions and wet conditions (pay particular attention to the amount of steering lock used in each situation and what the inside rear may be doing).

To cure your oversteer, set the rear width to 1380mm, put the front width half way between your adjustment range then play with the seat position until you find a good general balance. You now have a kart with a good balance that gives you 20mm adjustment on the rear and full adjustment on the front. This should mean you can tune with the front width and fine tune with the rear width.

In the wet you do the opposite at the rear end. Put the rears 20mm overall out from minimum rear width. Fronts halfway through the range, then position the seat where you get a good balance. This is then your wet base setup. In the wet, you'll tend to find you get the best balance with the seat higher and further forward. However, it is worth remembering that it is easy for the driver himself to put weight over the front of the kart, but harder to put weight over the rear.

The weather in the UK makes changing to a full wet setup very difficult, since most wet days are changeable. In these situations, you need a good wet setup to change to that can be altered in the smallest amount of time possible. This usually precludes moving the seat so you need to keep this in mind.

The best pitlane tool any driver has is an experienced mechanic/spotter. It is often easier to see what a kart is doing than feel what it is doing. A good mechanic will spot the cause of a poorly handling kart almost immediately.
