No I would say it is a reed valve problem, probably chipped a reed. Remove the reed block and check very carefully, even a small chip can cause this symptom.
Last season my max suddenly developed an inabiity to pull away from the dummy grid cleanly and was massively lacking in low end power, allthouh the reed petals looked ok on initial inspection a close look revealed a very small chip from one petal. Replaced the reed block, problem solved.
BTW the later type reed block (gold anodising) has a better finish than the silver ones and apparently are more reliable.
