It sounds like the axle has been 'cut down' by the previous owner. This is often done to soften the rear handling. Dependent on how wide you were running at the rear there can be very little axle for the rear hub to grip on to. In which case you need to make sure there are no contaminants on the axle or hub, using brake cleaner and make sure the hub is really tight.
The key is to stop the hub turning on the axle during acceleration and braking, rather than keeping the hub on the axle which relies on friction between the axle and the hub.
If your really worried put in a standard length axle. A novice driver won't notice the difference.
