Weeelll......although I am a little surprised that it has started to shed "balls", the fact is that in spite of the description, these are not intended for liquids, but are actually pnuematic system air silencers! I assume that you're using it as a combined filter/weight on the tank pipe; perhaps they don't like hitting the side of the tank under the g forces. How long had you been using it - they're cheap, so perhaps replacing it every few meetings would avoid the ball shedding problem.
