I would say that you couldn't choose a more exciting yet 'user friendly' class. No messing about with stripping engines etc. There is a limited amount of 'tuning' you need to learn about the carb (jets, mixture) and we've found that small changes to the chassis geometry (tracking, ride height and so on) can improve handling significantly. But apart from that it's really quite straightforward; my 14-year old does pretty much all the weekly mechanics on the kart - I just spanner check it, not always very well I must admit!

The technical help available from TalKo and the other racers we've found to be superb. Just witness any dad having a spot of bother on the dummy grid at S1 and you'll see all the dads jumping in there to help... (thanks to all for their help at Buckmore btw!)

However this brings me to one word of caution; if it's his first year of racing, you might find S1 a bit daunting for him. Remember that it is the British Championship and the drivers take it very seriously. We were advised to wait until our son had raced the class for a year at club level before venturing in to S1 and we are glad we did! thanks for that Paul ;-)

I'm not sure where you're situated but the chances are you'll have a bit of travelling to do to find a regular club. Llandow certainly; Isle of Man too but it's a bit expensive on the ferry - in 2009 the new track will be well worth the trip though! As you've heard there's also the 'one off' meetings (Festival, O and GP plate) but don't forget the Lakeland Challenge at Rowrah in August. Rowrah have also been known to allow the odd 4s in with their 2s racers, they're very welcoming and the lap times are comparable.

I know there are a couple of lads in N. Wales so I've been wondering if we can start racing monthly meetings at Hooton Park - not sure if anyone else reading this would care to comment?

Hope to see you around the circuits.
