At the beginning of last season I considered replacing my ageing 2000 Solo as I was getting frustrated with our lack of pace. However, I could not afford it, so tested a few set-up changes, brakes, floor tray, torsion bars, etc, and found myself at the sharp end of the grid with the 07/08 Wrights and 7Karts, and in fact beating them! I persisted with the chassis, servicing my own engines and during the season set fastest laps and a new lap record at Bayford, together with a win and some good placements.
I'm not saying that it's the fastest kart over a race distance (most of the time) but the fastest laps and lap record speak for themselves. Don't dismiss a chassis just because it's a few years old - test, find out what works with it and for you, develop your driving together with the chassis and this will be quicker than just going out and buying what everyone else is each year!
Chassis are all different and the set up varies. For example, my tyre pressures start about 13 to 15 whilst the rest of the grid are at 18 to 20 and above (on YDS). I made the mistake of listening to advice from other teams and wrecked a race by raising the pressures. My kart, and possibly driving style, suit lower pressures....
Having said all this, I might still go and get a new chassis this year if I can find the money!!!
