Buy a cheap second-hand 'simple' rev counter and work with it for a while.
It'll be so cheap as to be silly!

That one is currently at 99 pence....
Use it and then walk over to any friendly other team who have a Mychron (forget the standard Alfano!) and compare what YOU can see to what THEY can see and see if you think you'd like the benefits of the Mychron.
Do rememebr that you don't ONLY use a rev counter to measure peak revs! One great use is to to check you 'exit' speeds. Pick an exit point on each corner and check your revs as you CROSS that point on every lap.
It's almost guaranteed that if a change of line, or braking or steering input, or seating position (etc.) INCREASES the exit revs at that point, then THAT is what you chould change your driving style 'to' for that corner.
A digital display (just rapidly changing numbers) is MUCH harder to read than than a 'sweep' display.
Secondly, with the 'memory' abilities of a Mychron (and remebering you are in a 'team' event) you can compare your laps with each other. You may already have IDENTICAL lap times but, when you compare your 'split-lap' with a team mate, you will notice that he/she gets through one section of the track 0.5secs faster than YOU do, and vice versa on ANOTHER part of the lap. If you then combine the 'best' parts of your lap with the 'best' part of his lap.... you'll reduce BOTH of your lap times by 0.5 seconds!
I have been driving karts at Rye House for (literally) 50 years! When I used that EXACT trick with my son, I found James took a BETTER 'route' on corner X than I did as he was ALWAYS 0.5 secs quicker than me there. I was quicker than he was in other places. We both gained 0.5 decs from our laps...... and, for me, that's after FIFTY years on that track! I was STUNNED!
Even a standard Mychron will allow you to learn things you don't expect..... if you use it well!
Before you ask, I have NO connection with Mychron or their importers except that we used one!
