You can usually get away without a new gasket.
Once the engine is off, degreased and the clutch is removed. With the engine at TDC, with both rockers slack, put it on its side (recoil) and remove the side cover bolts.
Gently tap the side cover up on both sides where the oil filler is. When you see the seal is broken, carefully run a Stanley blade around the joint so that the gasket remains all on the cover or block. Lift of the side cover. you can then lift out the camshaft and inspect. You don't even need to drain the oil, although you will find it easier if you do, also removing the push rods before you start makes it easier to put the cam back in, but don't mix them up or you may need to reset the tappets.
