Itpro. Your "design logic" is wrong. It is the piston seal that pulls the piston away from the disc. When the brake is pressed, the piston moves out and the seal is squashed against the side of its groove. When the brake pressure is released the seal relaxes and pulls the piston back. Take the pads out, press the brake. Watch the piston when the brake pressure is released. It will move back even if it is not in contact with the disc.
