over torquing the head bolts used to be common and meant you could not use the bolts again for fear of shearing them off.
Normal head bolts start to stretch just after 17lb ft so beware. Once they stretch they stretch and shear easily, usually needing an easi-out to remove the part that stays in the block.
It's no use to you, within MSA rules but one of the mods I do for Open engines is to fit high tensile studs into the block and that enables me to tighten as much as I ever need (and really pull the block out of shape!)
I stress that you really need to check the valve guides for slackness or you will lose power up the stem and lose oil down into the comb' chamber. Brian P.
