This seems to be getting lost in my type of argument.......

The position of the engine WILL affect the weight distibution. However, compared to the risk of throwing a chain because you are running too long a chain is (in my opinion) MUCH more risky.

You can always adjust other items to 'absorb' the new position of the engine (move the weights around the kart) so, the position of the engine need NOT affect the handling.

In practice, try to keep the engine in the same (similar) place, almost regardless of the sprockets chosen, that implies having different chains for different of sprockets but, in practice, you'll only need a few chains as one may well be fine (as an example) for 72, 73, and 74 teeth.

The advice is often given as follows:-

'Add the front sprocket teeth and the rear sproket teeth plus 10 to get the number of links you need in a chain'.

For me, I've always placed the engine where I want it (roughly), drape a LONG chain round the driven and drive sprocket, count the links to make the chain....... and make the chain... (or buy one of that length)!
