But my point remains valid. What you are trying to achieve is great - a simple quick check. And ultimately what we are looking to correct is the legal use of variances in flywheel and crank keyways and the illegal modifications of same through a fixed maximum coil/magnet position.

The tool and gauge deliver the simple and quick check but ultimately there must be a specified measurement of ignition retard so that the vagaries of the remainder of mass produced components can be eliminated. Otherwise all we are really doing is shifting the problem away from the flywheel and crank as present to the crankcase and crank cover on the clutch side.
