Again whilst this is true (and a correctly thinned key will make subsequent re-assembly easier)it is the position of the magnet edge in relation to the gauge at true TDC that is the concern of the scrutineers. Taking too much metal off simply means you have to back the flywheel off on assembly and you will need to reference the gauge each time to check that it is correct.
