My theory (which seems to have provided some success over the years) is to keep your engines as close to the centre line of the kart as you can. In addition to the set up flexibility it will also assist in concentrating the centre of gravity. It may also assist with steering geometry effort in lifting the inside wheel whilst cornering.

It also looks and, more importantly, feels right. Have a look at the quick karts regardless of make. I bet you find they have a similar set up.
