another method is to use a piston stop such as featured in the tech section article on this site (http://www.karting.co.uk/KandK/Tech/MappingValveTiming.html )and here's one in an online shop

it's unlikely that you could twist the crank as it is cast and a one piece item The 5/16" unf thread would prob' strip before the crank twisted.
