We all leant the same way - the hard way usually but the advantage of this board is the ability to ask for free advice.

A lot will depend on just how bent the axle is as to whether it can be straightened. The big plus is it will cost nothing to repair. All you need is a marker pen (to mark the high spot), a length of scafford tube (3-4 feet) and someone heavy to sit on the opposite end of the axle.

If you are to replace the axle I tend to simply take it off the chassis and remove the parts.
