Ross,

What you suggest was exactly what I recommended to the club before they met to set out the 2013 rules. We had discussed a change of tyre for 2012, however, until there was certainty of what was happening at the Honda Challenge I recommended that this be deferred but if we were to change that plenty of notice should be given. My reasoning for sticking with the two slicks and single wet was due to the lack of such notice.

Clearly this was not considered, however, I do contend that we should be running to the same regulations as the National Championship. We always have, however, for years have been the odd ones out and need to change at some point. It was different around the mid 2000s when 3 Yorkshire & NE circuits had healthy prokart grids all running the Dunlop only. As we are the last one left we need to fall into line but the absence of notice it makes sense for a transition period to be available for the YDS slick but retain the use of both Dunlop and Bridgestone wet.

Thus our regulations are properly aligned with the National Championship and we get rid of the daft 3 month period to use up wet tyres when it might be dry.

Do I think this will attract drivers from other circuits? - No. Do I think tyres are the reason we have had reduced numbers in the past 2 seasons? - no. Do I think there will be significant kart set up change on the different tyre? - No. Do I think it will make any difference to the racing? No. Bottom line is come April we will all be on the same tyre and it makes no difference if the fastest lap is the last lap. Do I think new tyres will always be fastest? - No. Do I think lap times will be quicker? no. Am I bothered? No.

There is significant experience locally via the fathers of two former WL champions and current and former British Champions (sprint and endurance). We should take counsel from them; individuals who actively promote and support WL as a facility and kart club rather than the views of individuals who stood on the pit wall last year and blatantly told everyone that there would be no owner driver racing at WL in 2013!

In summary we need to change at some time. Keep the tyres as 2012 for the first 3 months and drop the Dunlop SL1 from April onwards and move on.

Finally, grids are transient. Some move class, others move to national championships while others simply retire (some are a loss others simply aren't). 10 years ago grids were 30+. How many still race at WL? 2 (David Harrison and Dave Brewis - but 3 if you include me). Take it back just 5 years and it was just 5 including me).

Graeme
