It is very likely your gear ratio is way off.
It is not only the number of teeth on the rear sprocket. You need to relate the size of rear to the one on the engine. The clutch drums/engine sprockets come in a number of sizes.
You say you run on a small tight track. It is possible your mates kart runs with an 89 rear but itch a smaller front sprocket such as a 16T. I if this is the case and they are using small front sprockets and you have , let's say a 20T they would still most likely leave your 'tuned' motor for dead out of the corners even if you put the same size rear as them.
The track you run on must also be very small and tight with a very low top speed to be running sprockets as large as 89. A 19 /70 pair will only allow about 55 mph at max revs on standard kart tyre sizes.
Go count the teeth on the front sprocket!
