I was and I can tell you that we were NOT nicer people; we were JUST as 'hard' as the today's kids!
(Damn it, the World Championships in the late 1950s were marked by the Americans racing with BASEBALL BATS taped behind the Nasau panel!)
However, because driver in front could RETALIATE if he was being hit from behind (by simply moving OVER so that the bumper of the 'hitter' rode over the rear tyre of the 'target'), ALL of us were a LOT more circumspect about shunting! Thus the racing was cleaner overALL!
We aloso had TOUGHER CoCs who took no prisoners! Step out of line and, like as not... you'd be going HOME!
