chris .... can i pick you up on one point .

I agree at you point of drivers who brake for no apparent reason when they really are braking , but i assum you don't and havn't driven a powerful big engined automatic car ?

quite often you'll find when driving one you glance the brakes to keep things in check as they don't engine brake in quite the same way a manual does.
I was surprised how much i found i did it when i had a new eclass , all our other cars are manuals and i find i comfort brake quite often when driving an auto ... and quite often you'll notice thats the type of car that does it ...

given enough space between you and the car in front this won't affect you at all

just a thought.
