Well they have demonstrated that they can't produce cars that can race each other while spending huge amounts arriving at identically the same end point using minutely different paths. Its time for a change. Its time to do something different.
Outside of the aero, the tyres have probably the biggest influence on car performance, yet they're spec. [i.e. fixed] so we shouldn't be aversed to the concept. The ECU is spec. too, yet there's not much grumbling about that. Why not free up things like tyres, chassis development, braking, even electronics. Let the designers and engineers work on parts that may have some semblance of social usefulness en route to a more entertaining outcome.
