I think doing your accounts and paying your staff is pretty mainstream business use. I think collaborating on large reports requiring word processing and spreadsheets with database integration is pretty mainstream. I think playing games is a pretty mainstream PC use. CAD/CAM is, whilst not mainstream business, certainly a common use of PC's in engineering. Developing embedded systems similarly (and I highlighted PowerPC purely because it was the architecture used by Apple prior to switching to Intel x86). CRM databases are vitally important to many medium to large businesses and some smaller ones. ACT & Goldmine being typical examples. Data acquisition is something people on this site have probably used (or how about max jetting software).

Surely, if the Mac has some real-world uses beyond typing a letter and internet based tasks, it wouldn't be hard to name at least some apps? I even threw in design and music creation so Mac users at least had a couple of easy answers.
