Some schools still do.
My son has opted for engineering as one of his GCSE choices. There are only 12 places available and over 60 pupils applied.
I'm guessing in order to sort the wheat from the chaff the school gave each apllicant a task on monday morning which had to be completed by friday.
Task was interview an engineer then write a report on 'A day in the life of....'
They also had to identify 5 elements from the interview which increased their desire to be an engineer and why. They also had to produce a CV. Parents also had to provide a covering letter outlining why their child should be accepted.
Given that all this had to be completed outside of school and only 3 days were available to do it, it was a pretty tough task.
Over 50% of applicants failed to complete this.
I'm sure there is a message there but cant quite make out what it is.
