Errr.... I've only just read this thread and you seem to be missing something here..... and that's called 'knowledge'.

Yup.. Churchil got thrown out after the war..... why? Because the Tories were associoated with what got us INTO the war: the voters were NOT voting about Churchill in the 1945 election..... but Chamberlain and the others.

How long was Churchill OUT of power as Prime Minister? If you were RIGHT, he'd not have been voted back the INSTANT that the public saw how H*O*P*E*L*E*S*S the Labour Govt. was!

Secondly..... you seem to be the ONLY pundit who does NOT think that the execution...... errr.... accidental firearm discharge.... into the head.... of Bin Laden has, as near as damnit, GUARANTEED he'll win the NEXT presidential election! (in much the same way as the Falklands boosted the blessed Margaret).

You misjudged the British public in history and you seem to be misjudging the Americans' love of executions an retribution. Put yourself in the mind of the 'average' Yank.....:

"What's NOT to love about unloading your gun into the head of an AyRab.... 'specially when he has BOASTED about hurting the good old U.S of A?"

What's the betting that'll be the 2012 ELECTION SLOGAN for Obama?
