Well, to my astonishment – I am as cynical as they come about such things – I have now been very reliably informed by a first-hand source (with no personal interest in being misleading) that the ‘race’ was entirely genuine. JC drove the car all the way, stopping for only a 3-hour sleep at a Holiday Inn near Copenhagen. He even skipped breakfast when he learned how ‘well’ Hammond & May were doing.
Begs the question: Why go to the trouble of making it real when most viewers would expect it to be faked anyway!
