Not a chance of 40% mark up on tyres, I’ve been in the privileged position to know the margin that a couple of large to medium sized retailers make on tyres, obviously I can’t give exact figures.

Let just say that for the most popular make of tyres the margin is pretty small after factoring in the cost of shipping from importer to retailer, often free shipping from retailer to customer, then many retailers have to discount tyres from RRP to retain repeat business and the amount of cash flow tied up in bulk purchasing enough tyre sets to get the top percentage margin to make stocking tyres worth while in the first place.

My guess is the real money is made by the importer.
