Apple - Proprietary, use it for what Apple tell you, much like any other household appliance. It does what it does but not a lot else. Stable.

Microsoft - Largely proprietary but with much greater choice. Use it for a wide range of tasks on a wide range of hardware at the expense of some stability.

Linux - Largely open source. Use it for anything you like on any hardware you like at the expense of having to do much of the work yourself.
