Nowhere have I stated that we should wait until we run out. I have asserted that we WILL run out and that "we haven't reached the point where it is econmically, socially or politically necessary to switch."

The global economic (let alone social) disaster that would occur by substantially raising oil/fuel prices makes this option completely unviable. Remember, car fuel usage is a very minor part of the overall energy consumption picture. To have any affect on the amount of oil being used would require a substantial increase in oil prices across the board.

Our only option (as I have stated throughout such debates) is to develop alternative energy sources. At the moment, all these alternatives to the combustion engine do is move the problem from the car to the power station.
