slightly off topic but just sharing...
in 1975, while commissioning a BNOC rig in the Moray firth, we were told the oil would last 25 years- this seemed forever but still wondered what the plan was for after 25 years.
in the Shetlands in the late 70's flare stacks burnt gas off, on the hill at Sullom Voe oil terminal, almost non stop every day of the year and yet there was no gas for locals on the island. The 'waste product' was burnt non stop during the three years I was there.
in 1985, in the Falklands, while talking to locals they said they had seen oil exploration 20 years before- so it was always a case of extracting it when the price made it viable.
